On our latest episode of the Productions Plus Podcast, we had the pleasure of sitting down with the multitalented Janet Pound—a SAG actress turned agent, casting director, playwright, and now author—for an honest and insightful look at what really happens behind the casting table.

Hosted by our CEO and President, Hedy Popson, this episode was more than just an industry interview—it was a masterclass in navigating a career in entertainment. Janet shares her journey from modeling in bell bottoms for AMC (yes, the car company once sold clothes!) to booking roles for Clint Eastwood films and casting Drew Barrymore’s roller derby movie Whip It.

🎭 Highlights from the episode include:

  • The surprising truth about what casting directors actually look for in an audition (hint: it’s not your resume).
  • The difference between a casting director and a talent agent—and why that distinction matters.
  • How charisma, behavior on set, and authenticity can make or break a career.
  • Practical tips for nailing self-tapes, from lighting and slates to following directions.
  • Why actors need to be flexible, take direction well, and—above all—have fun with the process.

Janet also shares advice from her new book, Advice from a Casting Director, which is available now on Amazon. The book includes industry stories, audition tips, and original monologues to help actors expand their toolbox.

Whether you’re a seasoned performer or just getting started, this episode is packed with valuable lessons, humorous anecdotes, and real-world advice that demystifies the often intimidating audition process.

At Productions Plus, we pride ourselves on being more than just a talent agency—we’re a place where careers evolve. In a recent episode of the Productions Plus Podcast, CEO Hedy Popson sat down with a panel of internal team members who started as talent with Productions Plus and later transitioned into full-time roles within the company. Their stories offer valuable insight for those considering a career as a product specialist, brand ambassador, trade show talent, or event professional.

The Journey: How They Got Started

Each panelist had a unique path into the industry:

  • Kelly Paredes began as a working actor in New York, picking up brand ambassador gigs before discovering the world of auto shows.
  • Cindee Kudowski grew up attending auto shows in Chicago and later found herself on the other side of the display as a product specialist.
  • Abby Kahlert wanted a way to travel and earn money post-college, and Productions Plus provided the perfect opportunity.
  • April Smith-Olave loved the adventure, traveling across the country and even working events on a cruise ship.

Each of them emphasized how this work provided flexibility, career growth, and lifelong connections—whether in acting, marketing, or business.

What It Takes to Succeed as a Product Specialist

One of the key takeaways from the conversation was the skills that make a great product specialist. Here’s what the panelists agreed on:

Adaptability – You’ll work in different cities, interact with diverse audiences, and need to adjust your messaging to connect with each one.
Professionalism & Dependability – Live events can be unpredictable, and talent who can roll with last-minute changes stand out.
Strong Communication Skills – Whether engaging consumers or representing a brand, being articulate and personable is key.
Preparedness – Having an up-to-date headshot, a polished résumé, and quick response time increases booking opportunities.

As Kelly put it, “If you want to grow in this industry, have your materials ready! We want to help move you into bigger roles.”

The Transition: From Talent to Internal Team

So, what’s it like to move from being a talent to working on the operations side? The panelists shared some surprises:

📌 Behind-the-Scenes Complexity – Managing bookings, talent coordination, and client expectations is a puzzle with many moving pieces.
📌 The Importance of Casting – Account managers act as casting directors, matching the right person with the right opportunity.
📌 A Newfound Appreciation – Many realized how much work their former account managers put in to ensure seamless events.

April, now an Account Director, found joy in handling budgets and logistics, something she never expected. Abby, an Account Coordinator who is a recent college graduate, embraced the structure and sense of accomplishment in her new role.

Advice for Aspiring Talent

If you’re considering signing up with Productions Plus, here are some pro tips from our team:

Say Yes to Opportunities – Even if it’s outside your comfort zone, you never know where it may lead.
Take an Improv Class – It helps with quick thinking and engaging with people on the fly.
Learn Some Business Skills – Understanding marketing and event logistics can open up more opportunities.

As Cindy wisely said, “You never know who you’ll meet or what connections you’ll make. Be open to new experiences.”

What is an Automotive Product Specialist?

An Automotive Product Specialist is a pivotal role within the auto show and event industry, representing major automotive brands across the United States. At Productions Plus, a Product Specialist serves as the face of these brands, providing in-depth knowledge and enthusiastic presentations to engage and inform attendees. This role combines the expertise of a talent agency professional with the approachability of a top-tier host, ensuring that visitors leave with a lasting, positive impression of the brand.

Want more info?  Check out Maggie’s “day in the life” of a Product Specialist video. Maggie was also recently a guest on the Productions Plus Podcast. Listen in for her insights on how to get started in the industry!

The Role of a Product Specialist

Product Specialists are more than just knowledgeable representatives; they are the embodiment of the brand’s values and innovations. Whether stationed at a bustling auto show or an exclusive promotional event, they deliver compelling narratives about the latest automotive technologies and design advancements. Their responsibilities include:

  • Demonstrating vehicle features and benefits through interactive presentations and discussions.
  • Answering detailed questions about car specifications, performance data, and industry trends.
  • Engaging with potential customers, helping to generate excitement and interest in new models.
  • Providing personalized experiences that cater to the interests of diverse audiences, including multilingual talent to accommodate non-English speakers.

How to Audition with Productions Plus

Auditioning to become a Product Specialist with Productions Plus is a unique opportunity to step into a role that places you at the forefront of the automotive industry. Here’s how you can audition:

  1. Application Process: Start by visiting the Productions Plus website and downloading our P+ App to create a profile. Additionally, you will need to fill out an application.
  2. Resume and Headshot: Upload a professional resume, current headshot and a full-length photo.  You will also have the option to upload a promotional resume. Your resume(s) should highlight any experience in public speaking, promotional activities, or roles where you’ve acted as a brand representative. Experience in automotive sectors, though advantageous, is not mandatory.
  3. Initial Screening: Productions Plus reviews applications to select candidates who best fit each of our client’s needs and the specific requirements of the role. This will include assessing your relevant experience, ability to interact with others, your knowledge of the automotive industry, and whether you have proficiency in multiple languages.
  4. Audition Day: Selected candidates will be invited to create an introduction audition video, as well as a presentation audition video following a specific script.  These videos will be shown to various clients who are selecting new team members.   Selections are often based on geographic need – meaning whether they need talent in the city where you reside, as well as multi-lingual needs.
  5. Follow-Up: Post-audition, the team at Productions Plus will contact you to discuss the next steps. This could involve further interviews or immediate onboarding, depending on the urgency of the event schedule and your availability.

Becoming a Product Specialist with Productions Plus offers a dynamic career path with the opportunity to work at high-profile auto shows and promotional events across the country. It’s a chance to develop a diverse skill set that includes public speaking, brand promotion, and audience engagement—all while representing some of the most exciting automotive brands in the industry. Welcome to the exciting world of child acting and modeling! If you’re considering guiding your child into the entertainment industry, Productions Plus offers a robust theatrical division dedicated to nurturing young talents in child acting and modeling. A great starting point is our podcast, “Productions Plus Podcast,” where in a recent episode, CEO Hedy Popson and Theatrical Agent Debbie Williams discuss valuable insights on how to get your “Kids in the Biz.

Step 1: Assessing Interest and Comfort in Front of the Camera

The journey into child acting and modeling begins with a candid conversation between our agent and the parents to gauge not only the child’s interest but also their availability. It’s crucial for kids to be comfortable with speaking and being themselves on camera. During this initial assessment, we look for the essential qualities such as drive, charisma, and that special “it” factor—the undeniable charm that makes a child stand out.

Parents play a pivotal role here. While you don’t need to be available around-the-clock, flexibility is key to managing auditions and call-backs successfully.

Step 2: Representation Decision and Preparing Your Portfolio

Should we decide to represent your child in child acting and modeling, the next step is creating a compelling portfolio. This includes high-quality photos that showcase your child’s personality through a variety of expressions and poses, including headshots and full-body shots. Regular updates to this portfolio are crucial as your child grows and changes. Searching for “child actor submission photos” online can provide you with great examples and standards to follow. Your child will need a profile within the Productions Plus app so that you can upload your child’s photos and update their stats on an ongoing basis.

Step 3: Training and Behavior

Even the most adorable child needs to behave professionally on set. We recommend some foundational training, which might include on-camera classes, theater programs, and monologue training. This not only improves their skills but also their discipline and professionalism.

A Pro Tip from Debbie

One effective technique for practice is to have your child watch commercials, pick one featuring a child and imagine themselves in that role. They can then act out the commercial, allowing both of you to compare their performance with the original. This exercise is excellent for identifying areas where your child can improve their acting and speaking skills.

Step 4: Making a Strong First Impression

The initial interaction or “hello” can significantly impact how agents and casting directors view your child. This greeting is your child’s opportunity to shine and leave a memorable impression.

Looking Ahead

Make sure to tune into the next episode of our podcast, where Hedy and Debbie will discuss how to handle rejections—a common part of the acting and modeling journey, and an essential learning experience for both parents and children.

By following these steps and leveraging resources like our podcast, you can navigate the complexities of child acting and modeling more effectively. Remember, at Productions Plus, we’re here to guide you and your child through every step of this exciting journey.

Becoming an exceptional Brand Ambassador is an art that requires dedication, enthusiasm, and a strategic approach. As a Brand Ambassador, your role is pivotal in shaping the public’s perception of a brand. Your energy, knowledge, and interaction with consumers can turn a casual observer into a loyal customer. Whether you’re just starting or looking to enhance your skills, here are five tips to ensure you excel as a Brand Ambassador, including how partnering with Trusted Herd can open doors to the best Brand Ambassador gigs.

1. Prepare Ahead of Time

Preparation is key to excel as a Brand Ambassador. Knowing the specifics of the event can significantly impact your performance. Communicate proactively and professionally with the Account Manager.  Follow the directions you are provided and ensure you have clear answers to the following before the event day:

  • Who is your onsite contact? Having a direct line to someone in charge can solve issues quickly and efficiently.
  • What are your hours? Understanding your schedule helps you manage your energy and commitments effectively.
  • Where is the event taking place? Familiarize yourself with the venue to navigate the event effortlessly and provide accurate directions to attendees.

2. Dress the Part

To excel as a Brand Ambassador, wearing the correct wardrobe is crucial. Your appearance is the first thing people notice, and it should reflect the brand’s values and aesthetics. Always clarify the dress code beforehand and, if possible, try on your outfit to ensure it fits well and looks professional. Remember, you’re not just representing a brand; you’re embodying it.

3. Proactively Engage with Consumers

The essence of being a Brand Ambassador lies in engagement. Approach consumers with a smile and open body language. Be proactive but not intrusive. Ask open-ended questions to initiate conversations and listen actively. Your goal is to create a memorable, positive experience that consumers associate with the brand.

4. Maintain High Energy

Your energy can be contagious. Maintaining high enthusiasm, friendliness and energy throughout your shift makes the brand more appealing to consumers. This doesn’t mean you need to be over-the-top at all times, but showing genuine excitement and passion for the product or service you’re representing can significantly influence consumer perception.

Hear from Productions Plus Account Manager, Krystal Zuba, on her experience being a Brand Ambassador and now hiring them:

The audition process starts before you even get contacted by an agent. The process starts with your profile on the Productions Plus Talent Portal. Making sure you have an up-to-date profile for P+ is key. This also applies to other websites such as Actor’s Access, Casting Networks, and Cast It Talent.

Having an updated profile is key as it widens the scope of casting search criteria which can identify you as a potential fit. It can improve your chances for a specific role.

If an agency is searching for a 35-year-old and finds a profile of interest but finds the most recent headshot is of a 22-year-old—that could rule you out.

Not only is an updated profile key for matching you with a role, the information on the Productions Plus Talent Portal is used to send mailings, payments, and contact and communicate with you. If any of your contact information is outdated, you may miss out.

If you aren’t sure if your profile needs a touch-up, reach out to your agent with any specific questions. This is a collaborative effort that we are glad to be a part of!

Self-taped auditions have become the norm. Many Casting Directors have embraced the increasing sophistication of cell phone technology allowing talent to become their own camera crew with remarkable quality.

Here are a few general guidelines to follow to make sure you present the best you:

  • Choose a location with good lighting and a neutral background.
  • Begin with head and shoulder shot facing directly into the camera stating your first name, last name, and agency (Productions Plus).
  • Follow with a full body shot directly facing the camera.
  • Return to the initial head and shoulder shot looking just off-camera (not looking directly at the camera) speaking to another person or reader.
Woman looking into cell phone camera recording herself with a ring light

This has been a new adjustment for many in the industry, but it just goes to show the adaptability of everyone—from self-taped auditions by talent to callbacks via Zoom which have allowed continued casting and shooting of projects.

Just remember that professional studio quality is not required, let alone expected, from these self-taped auditions. The main objective is to be audible and visible.
